I live in El Paso, Texas across the river from Juarez, Mexico where all of the events of Charles Bowden's other book, Down by the River took place and this book is a real disappointment. A side story of particular interest is her relationship with her mother. Joan Harcourt-Turner has been telling and writing children's fantasy stories since she was a child herself. I saw this book in the 2013 list of recommendations from NPR and bought it because the idea was intriguing. I was enchanted by this lovely story. It is not too graphic, so it is enjoyable. There’s still plenty more to be seen in THE SKYLIGHTER though. Then, the whole gang comes together to solve the frosty mystery.
